What is the difference between Type 1, Type 2, and CCS connectors?

Aug 07, 2025

Here’s a clear breakdown of the differences between Type 1, Type 2, and CCS connectors:

Type 1 (SAE J1772):

Single-phase AC connector, common in North America. Typically supports slower charging speeds (up to 7.4 kW).

Type 2 (IEC 62196):

Three-phase AC connector, standard in Europe. Supports higher power (up to 22 kW or more), and often used at public charging stations.

CCS (Combined Charging System):

Combines either a Type 1 or Type 2 AC connector with two extra DC pins for fast charging.

CCS1 is based on Type 1 (North America)

CCS2 is based on Type 2 (Europe)

CCS supports DC fast charging at much higher power levels—up to 350 kW in some cases.

Each serves different charging needs, depending on region, charging speed, and vehicle compatibility.
